The bathroom is cruising right along with a ton of progress over the last six weeks, though it won't be completed until the end of this month when the plumbers are available for their final install. I was able to get drywall installed and the flooring in, then started installing some of the finishes as well. Having things like the sink and the mirror up on the wall honestly helped me get things off the floor and the basement a little more cleaned up. To be honest, this is not my dream bathroom. In a perfect world with unlimited budgets, I'd have a colorfully tiled shower and wainscoting. I'd bring the 40s arches downstairs and add one in the tub and shower alcove... and I would have a whole separate area for the laundry. But, this is not a perfect world. Budgets aren't limitless, space and existing configurations are a factor, and kids break things. Upstairs, I got exactly the bathroom I planned, exactly how I wanted it (down to the corner tub!). And I considered waiting on this bathroom until I could have exactly what I wanted. Perfect is the Enemy of DoneI have four kids! And one small bathroom. Our primary goal was not to do a beautifully tiled space. It was to have two bathrooms before the little kids started toilet training. Ideally, the budget would've been available to do the bathroom when the big kids' bedroom moved downstairs in 2020, but for many reasons that didn't happen.
I've written before that I don't think large bathrooms or a bathroom for each bedroom are an absolute need, and that what is important is a bathroom on every floor. No one wants to run up or down stairs in a bathroom-related emergency. After two years, we've had a bathroom-related emergency or two, and now it's time to make both the convenience of a second bath reality. Now, I'm creating a bathroom I can be proud of at the right time for us. Artistic tile choices can always come later, and now I won't be in a rush to find something that will work for what I need. The needs are already set with the pieces we have installed. And I can finally get the toilet out of the family room.
