Where History Meets Sustainability

Bathroom Rough In

The rough in of our bathroom systems is complete!  We started with the framing the walls after the drain lines were installed.  The first wall we did was the one along the family room so we could get that space put back together.  Then we went along the exterior walls, and used the drain lines to make sure all the spaces were precise for setting our systems.  Since the floors aren't exactly level, having an additional point of reference helped a lot.

Then we had the electrical run, along with electrical for the HVAC system and a full rewire of all our remaining knob and tube (more on that later it was intense!).  With all the electrical mostly in place, the plumbing supplies and vent lines through the new walls were able to go in.  While setting those, I had to move the electrical for the washer and dryer.  With one wall that handles the electrical for those and the plumbing for both the washer and the shower made fitting every system tricky.  We edited placement of two studs, and got everything set in place.

Slight Changes and Decisions

Upon inspection, we had to move one of our two outlets that was too close to the shower.  The second outlet was questioned: Why would we want one so close to the shower at all?  We're adding a towel heater.  It's also a good spot for a night light.

With everything roughed in and inspections passed, I added the insulation and vapor barrier to the rest of the walls, and the shower walls were added with the plumber.  I also furred down the ceilings in the bathroom to make the ceiling one flat plane.  With the location of the vent tie-in beneath the joists, the entire vent had to sit beneath those too. In order to maintain the integrity of the joists, we chose to run the water supply for the shower and the washing machine underneath too.  I installed stud guards over the gaps so we don't accidentally puncture any vital lines when we're hanging drywall.

Before I hang any drywall, I'll need to finish setting the vent for the exhaust fan and install more insulation in the ceiling.  Since this is right under a bedroom, I wanted to dampen the sounds that escape between floors.  We're using Rockwool Safe and Sound in our ceilings, which also acts as a fire suppressant between floors.  It's what we used above the two bedrooms, and it's been great!  We're move than halfway to this second bathroom, and I'm glad the end is almost in sight.
