Where History Meets Sustainability

HandmadeKatie: Welcome!

After being on the fence about creating a blog -essentially for my house- for a while, I've decided to jump on into it here.  I've been active on Instagram for a long time, but I wanted to come back to create a space that is all my own.  The community that has been so supportive on IG has been such a great place to find encouragement, develop ideas, and really discuss ways to bring old homes into the future.

What are we doing here?

I've come to see that in the blog space, there are some great people writing about how to make their old homes work for their families, and a few who are making decisions to future-proof their spaces.  But a lot of them live in warm climates or aren't sitting in the tundra of Minnesota winter.  My goal is to keep my old house old!  But I still want it to be a viable place to live in another hundred years.  So, we've been preserving what we can and changing what we need to change in order to make that work.

So far, we replaced a disgusting kitchen, preserved spaces in our main level, and added space in our basement.  I'm excited to break down all the things we've done on those projects, and to write a little more about how and why we came to the choices we did. We are on the brink of replacing our bathroom, and have sourced so many vintage pieces that now will stay out of the landfill.  It's going to be so good!  We'll also add another bathroom, in our basement to help future-proof our house and make it more livable for our family of six!

I'm glad you all are here, and looking forward to building this space together!

I am a parent, creative spirit, and old house lover.  My big passions are sustainable design and preservation.  Bringing these together is key to moving existing homes into the future.

There is definitely a mix of seasonal craftiness and old house projects with some major technology changes that help make preservation possible.  Along the way, I'm not afraid to share the ups, downs, and budgets.
