This autumn, I'm participating in the One Room Challenge, a design challenge to help designers, DIYers, and homeowners dedicate time to finishing a project in their own home over eight weeks. The community of people are all working hard, and each project posts a weekly update. This week's update is here! This is week three of the eight week challenge, if you're just joining my garage makeover, check out week 1 and week 2 to see the progress. The roof is done! I've been painstakingly sizing, cutting, and hammering in each shingle, each ridge, and each drip edge over the last week and a half, and I am glad to say I did it! I'm really happy with the warm color I chose for this (even though it's a little darker than the other roof structures), and I am loving how all the different areas of the yard seem to fit with the new roof now. It almost looks like the mulch color! I was a little delayed in finishing the roof over the weekend, because we had a ton of rain on Friday and Saturday was spent with the kids. They are really my biggest priority. Last week, one of them hopped on the roof with me for a little bit, and he did really well following all the directions for safety and being on the ladder. He agrees: the worst part isn't being on the roof, it's moving between the roof and the ladder. I also am working on getting the paint done as fast as I can! It seems painting temperatures are not going to be around quite as long as I had hoped, and we are going into a pretty chilly autumn. But it'll get done! One good thing about using Valspar paint: they started here! It can generally be applied at cooler temperatures than most. Still, my fingers are crossed for a few other warm days ahead. This week, I painted a sunburst mural on our garage door! I really want this door to be a fun addition to the alley instead of the plain white. This is a really cool old structure, and, I am determined to care for it and change its trajectory here! This adds to that bit of fun, and it will be a welcome sight during our mud season of early spring. The garage door that is here now isn't the original door: at one point, this had two carriage doors. The ghost marks are still there in the door casings. Since I'm not going back to the original carriage doors, I wanted to make this a truly fun point of interest. Our neighborhood is filled with colorful murals, and adding one here felt right. The colors also coordinate really well with what we have in the yard and in the house. I also examined the little garage window this weekend, and I found that the window desperately needs some help. So, I'm hoping to have a few warm enough days to reglaze the window and refinish it. The glazing is really rough! Where the lines should be smooth, it looks like the glazing putty was smooshed on and never straightened. Since it's a fixed-pane window, I'm going to scrape it and reglaze it in place. Wish me luck on that part! I ordered Sarco Dual Glaze, which can be applied at any temperature which is a huge help in our temperature-fluctuations in autumn.
With the new mural paint, window glazing putty, and wood repair kit for the rafter tails, we're up to $1,034.15 in the total project materials cost. I'm starting to lightly question what I'm really doing with this project, but that's pretty normal for me when costs jump a place value. I have a ton more updates over on Instagram, so check it out over there too (Full updates in the "Garage" highlight)! With the mural done, and window supplies on the way, I should have the rest of what I need on-hand. I love being able to repurpose the things already in my arsenal for projects like these. Even though I didn't stay under my $1000 budget, I'm glad to get the needed repairs done the right way. Overall, it's going really well!
