This week, I really focused on working with the kids to get the room cleaned! While challenging, they got a lot done, but weren’t super motivated to get the trash and accumulated junk out… It’s amazing how much got lost under the beds when they were bunked! Since it was a shared bedroom, I really wanted them to work together to give the kid remaining in here a fresh start. I worked really hard to get my things out of the old office, so it was only fair to have them both work together on a last big clean out of this room. Even though this room was a little bit of a mess, I’m still confident I can wrap it up in the next two weeks! Even though I really just jumped to this project last week, there have been a lot more going on through the One Room Challenge, which is already on Week 6! Head over to their Week 6 progress posts here. Special thanks to the One Room Challenge sponsor: Apartment Therapy. To see where we’re headed on this one, check out last week’s post. It’s going to be the perfect haven for a boy and his cat. The State of ThingsCurrently, the room is still a bit of a mess. The back corners of the room need a little more help and a little more rearranging, but we’ve already made a lot of progress on this one! The kids have done a decent job at going through their things, and collecting all the laundry (now we’ll have to divide it and weed out the too-small items). It has confirmed a lot of my plans should work really well, even if they got their hoarding tendencies from me. Most of the light demo is done, and there are just a few pieces of the old wainscoting to remove, mostly behind the bed. Then we can start dividing the room and painting! Little MotivationsOne thing I started doing this week was bringing some of the new things into the house, and getting these assembled. While these take up more room, seeing bits of the end result come in is really helping motivate him to get going on the things he needs to do in order to finish the room. The cat exercise wheel is one I’m especially excited about! Beyond cleaning, that does include organizing the things for his cat, and learning to set up organizational systems that will work for him.
I have really enjoyed taking him through the process for thinking about how his systems work, and it is getting him on the path to future success knowing how to manage in the future. It’s definitely something that his cat has helped with almost more than we ever could.
