Here we go again! This is my fifth time jumping into the One Room Challenge, and it's probably the most important project I've chosen so far! This round: I'm working on the initial makeover of our attic. Since the area is largely unfinished, the goal is to get it sealed up for winter. This has always been a storage attic, and there have already been a lot of adjustments so far. If I can get one area completely done, I'm looking at the little storage room and the stairs. The One Room Challenge is an eight-week event that pushes designers, DIYers, and homeowners to do a space in eight weeks! It is an opportunity to do a project with community, encouragement, and camaraderie. I also love that the eight week timeline really helps to create achievable goals for every week. Recently, through a program with our energy company, we had a visit from the Home Energy Squad. Every three years, they can come and help assess the energy systems in the house to guide homeowners in making energy-conscious choices.
With all the changes we've made in the last several years, I figured it was time for a second opinion and a review of our systems. It turned out to be a little bit of confirmation of what I already knew! Thankfully, our decisions seem to be on the right track. After having our new-old front door for over a year, we finally have it installed! I worked on stripping and refinishing last year, and with the burnout and restart of projects... I finally doubled-back to this one.
We've made a lot of door moves this summer, and even have a few more coming down the line, so getting this one moving was a really big step. With it being an exterior door, it was also a tricky one. Getting this door to fit in our slightly crooked original jamb was not as simple as swapping hinges and putting it in. Back in the start of the pandemic when I was pregnant and my partner started working from home, I really needed motivation to get going on the office portion of our basement project. Technically, it serves as the fourth bedroom in our house, and it's a really great space. More on the start of this project here, and the first iteration of the big kids' bedroom is here.
Currently, with the attic in shambles and our old storage now a bathroom... it's acting more as storage than much else. My partner also prefers to work where the house action is, and even switched jobs to make that happen. So, this room is flexible. I'm going to bring it back to the 2020 One Room Challenge when I finished it as an office, and had it ready to go. I used the One Room Challenge to really give me some extra motivation not to ignore this room while we were finishing the bedroom for the big kids to move downstairs. Truth be told though: I still have to finish the closet, and might make a few more adjustments along the way. |
